Winners of ADE’s Decentralised Energy Awards 2023 revealed...

The winners of the ADE’s Decentralised Energy Awards 2023 were revealed last night at a glamorous ceremony at London’s Hurlingham Club, which attracted nearly 400 guests from across the decentralised energy sector, government, politics and the wider economy.

Made possible this year by sponsors Vattenfall and InstaGroup, the prestigious event highlighted best practice in the sector, shone a light on the brilliant work undertaken by industry and celebrated the people that are behind decentralised energy’s greatest achievements.

The ADE’s President, the Lord Duncan of Springbank, opened proceedings by highlighting the need for industry to lead the way with innovation and blaze a path for others to follow. He was followed by the award presentations themselves, which saw a collection of influential guests from across industry and politics present the coveted awards to the night’s winners.

The winners were:

Heat & Efficiency Project Award (sponsored by Bevan Brittan LLP)

AMP Clean Energy for the Muntons’ low carbon bio energy centre at Stowmarket.

Muntons has taken an industry leading approach to decarbonising manufacturing processes through developing two biomass energy centres which will result in combined carbon savings of over 60%. The £16.5 million trailblazing project at Muntons’ Stowmarket site – funded, developed and operated by AMP Clean Energy – will save 15.5 thousand tonnes of carbon per year, helping Muntons to exceed its science-based target.

Power & Flexibility Project Award

Octopus Energy for their Intelligent Octopus project.

KrakenFlex has enabled Octopus Energy to provide a smart EV tariff, which incentivises green, and cheap energy to be utilised, in turn for control of when their cars will be charged. This allows for an ever-growing flexible load to be shifted, to reduce peaks, and fully utilise when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining!

Digital Innovation Award

Switch2 Energy Limited for their ICON Connected HIU.

Switch2’s ICON connected Heat Interface Unit (HIU) represents the next generation of HIU technology. ICON is the first HIU to be Amazon IoT enabled with a 5G NB-IoT modem, providing access to real-time data through a proprietary cloud-based dashboard, allowing network managers to be alerted to, and resolve issues remotely, making truly proactive operation and maintenance a reality.

Technical Innovation Award

E.ON UK for the Citigen Decarbonisation Project.

The Citigen retrofit project aims to decarbonise the City of London district energy scheme via 4MW combined heating and 2.8MW cooling heat pumps. The heat pumps recycle low grade heat from 3 sources: Citigen processes waste heat, the cooling network and 200m deep ground boreholes; before upgrading it to 80oC and feeding the district heating network with low carbon heat.

Enabler Award

West Sussex County Council for their Re-Energise Manor Royal local energy community.

The Re-Energise Manor Royal Local Energy Community (REMR) enables companies on one of the South East’s largest business districts to invest in low carbon energy together and share the benefits. The aim is to generate, share and consume clean energy, reduce costs, improve resilience, and achieve net zero. West Sussex County Council had a key role in establishing the LEC.

Rising Star Award

Alice Stamp from Arup and Lucy Sherburn from FairHeat.

Alice Stamp is a senior energy consultant at Arup. An expert in whole system modelling, Alice developed Arup’s Energy System Optimisation and Planning (ESOP) tool from concept to widespread adoption in Arup. She is playing leading roles for Arup on local area energy planning across the UK and globally and supporting BEIS on the development of heat network zoning.

Lucy is a consulting Engineer at FairHeat, her role has involved working on design and operation of new build heat networks, to deliver cost and energy saving improvements. In just 3 years, Lucy has established her presence and influence in the industry. Lucy's determination and dedication to contribute to a better future for the UK Heat Network industry is exemplary.

Net Zero Leader Award

The University of East London.

The University of East London’s community is made up of 25,195 total students from 140 different countries. It’s leading the green revolution by transitioning its estate to net zero by 2030 and ensuring all graduates have the skills and resilience to succeed in their careers and make a positive impact on society and the planet.
