Vattenfall is now looking for the right person to fill the position of Project Development Engineer at Vattenfall Heat UK . The UK business is growing successfully in the rapidly developing district and decentralised heat market in the UK. You will become a member of the fast growing Engineering Team and will play a key role in developing and delivering the technical solution for low carbon heating and cooling networks. In our solutions, heat networks and power networks are integrated and digitalized, generation technology is low and zero carbon, and customers are provided with a high level of service, underpinned by Vattenfall’s long and successful track record of operating decentralized networks across Europe, where we serve 2.2 million heat customers.
This is an exciting opportunity to develop and deliver engineering solution for large scale district heating and cooling developments. You will have an exceptional understanding of the good engineering design principles, however in addition will have awareness around commercial issues and have a very good stakeholder management skills. To be successful in this role you will have and experience in delivering design through different project stages.
In addition, you may be asked to take on responsibility for the technical delivery of heating and cooling networks, overseeing delivery of detailed design, procurement and construction phases. You will be responsible for ensuring a robust design risk management procedure is followed and for accepting designs on behalf of Vattenfall to verify alignment with project specifications. Ultimately, you will be responsible for ensuring systems are specified, designed and delivered to operate safely and demonstrate optimal performance.
The Project Development Engineer will be responsible for developing zero carbon district heating and cooling solutions for large scale developments including HIUs, secondary (in-building) network, heat substations, primary (underground pipe work) network, and the energy centre. This includes end to end lifetime energy and system performance models. The Project Development Engineer is responsible for technical solution from early client engagement stage through business model evaluation and post contract support and will be working closely with the Commercial, Delivery and Operations teams.
· Work closely with the project manager and the rest of the project team to ensure projects are delivered on time
· Provide technical solutions that enable zero carbon heat and cooling, considering system lifetime performance and operation
· Execute design and technical solutions for grid extensions and connections after system is in place
· Ensure engineering solution and design is delivered in line with the performance and business objectives
· Manage internal and external stakeholders, client and client’s technical advisors, internal and external engineering support, ensuring all deliverables are received in line with the agreed scope of works and verify compliance with project technical specifications or employer’s requirements
· Ensure engineering solution is taken through the governance process
· Ensure engineering solutions achieve carbon and financial performance targets
· Assure high safety, regulatory compliance, technical integrity and quality, including required authority approvals
· Engage with supply chains and specify best quality materials and equipment
· Identify and deliver design improvement opportunities to enhance system performance and profitability
To be successful you should have the following experience:
· Design management experience of district heating and cooling systems through all stages including Energy Centres, secondary networks and HIUs / tertiary networks
· Good knowledge of typical risks in heat networks and good knowledge of best practice engineering principles that enable high network performance standards
· Experience leading technical workstream on projects including managing supply chain, providing project reports, and managing client relationships
· Installation, operational and/or maintenance experience in the context of mechanical systems, especially district heating and cooling networks
· Good understanding of available supply chain in district heating industry including boilers, CHP, Heat Pumps, pumps, heat interface units, underground pipework
· Good understanding of low and zero carbon solutions
· Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills and commercial awareness
· Excellent organisational skills and a capability to deliver in a dynamic and flexible environment
· Safety conscious approach to work and understanding of design for safe installation, operation, maintenance and customer experience
· Software skills: required: MS Office preferred: EnergyPRO, AutoCAD, Hysopt
· Good knowledge of Building Regulations, Applicable British Standards, Good practice guidelines and Other national standards, regulations and guidelines
· Detailed understanding and knowledge of CP1 (2020)
· Experience procuring and managing contractors and external designers - preferred
· Chartered with relevant professional institution – preferred
· CIBSE CP1 heat network consultant – preferred
