Reported Boiler U-Turn Risks Net Zero and Investment in Green Heat
The Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) is “disappointed” by reports that the Government plans to abandon the planned 2035 phase-out of fossil fuel boilers. The trade association, which represents more than 160 organisations from across the energy sector, argues this decision threatens to derail the UK’s journey to net zero, jeopardising billions in private investment.
“We are disappointed to hear reports that plans to phase out fossil boilers by 2035 may not be going ahead.” said Caroline Bragg, Chief Executive Officer at the ADE. “We know to meet our net zero targets heat decarbonisation needs to happen at pace - this can only occur with strong signals to industry and consumers. Weak signals and watered-down policy will jeopardise billions in green heating investment at the time when we need it the most"
Heating accounts for 18% of the UK’s emissions, yet solutions are already within reach. Heat networks, heat pumps, and innovative green technologies are ready to scale, attracting billions in private investment. But this can only happen with clear, decisive government leadership. The Association argues if the Government’s reported U-turn was to go ahead it could undermine investor confidence and risk locking the UK into dependence on foreign fossil fuels.
The ADE is calling on the Government to recommit to phasing out fossil fuel boilers by 2035. The future of British heat must be clean, secure, and a driver of economic growth.
