Debate politicising net zero ‘fundamentally unhelpful’ for consumers and climate
Party leaders politicising net zero is fundamentally unhelpful for consumers and the climate. That’s according to the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) in its response to last night’s election debate.
Legally binding net zero targets depend on transitioning the UK to decarbonised heating, and the trade association states this can only be done with increased support for and deployment of heat pumps. It insists that leaders of the parties must work towards rolling out low-carbon heat technologies that prioritise consumers and the climate.
The ADE’s new Head of External Affairs, Pablo John, said: “We are disappointed to see the party leaders politicising heat decarbonisation at last night's debate. Research by the Climate Change Committee (CCC) recommends that the UK should be installing one million heat pumps a year by 2030 if we are to decarbonise heat at a rate that aligns with critical net zero targets.
“Distressing consumers around the cost of decarbonisation to score political points is fundamentally unhelpful. We will be working across this election and beyond, with all parties, to build consensus around the UK’s transition to clean heat. Jobs, bills and climate all depend on it.”
