A new era of clean electricity has been promised by the Government today, in their Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, published by the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). Recommendations for building an energy system that cuts bills and transforms Great Britain into a clean energy superpower have been laid out in a detailed plan that expects a significant increase in flexibility.
The Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) says this marks a crucial step towards an energy system that properly rewards consumers, and delivers substantial economic growth. The trade association, which represents more than 160 organisations from across the energy sector, has long advocated for the changes which are laid out in today’s Action Plan.
Commitments to leadership on consumer-led flexibility in the Government’s Action Plan are a positive step on the path to net zero says the ADE, and critical in ensuring that the energy system can remain operable as demand continues to grow.
Sarah Honan, Head of Policy at the ADE, said: “The Clean Power 2030 Action Plan has shown the Government’s true commitment to transforming the energy system. The ADE has for a long time advocated for the recommendations we are seeing in today’s publication. Taking leadership on flexibility and championing its role in the UK’s transition to net zero is particularly promising for industry.
“We are pleased to see that a Low Carbon Flexibility Roadmap will be published in the next year, so that industry can feel confident that the UK is transforming into a decarbonised, demand-led energy system. Flexibility is a crucial component in balancing renewable generation and could save the country £14.1 billion per year by 2040. Now is the time for us to see these words put into action, so that Great Britain can truly deliver on its net zero and economic growth ambitions.”
