The ADE is pleased to welcome the Energy White Paper, setting out the the Government's broad energy strategy and upcoming consultations and legislation.The Energy White Paper's scope is broad, covering households, commercial buildings and industry as well as gas, electricity, heat networks, hydrogen, CCUS, transport and oil and gas infrastructure.Some of the important new announcements include - Confirmation that the Government will introduce a standalone UK ETS from 1st January, not a Carbon Emissions Tax Commitment to review the overall governance of the energy system Commitment to consult on how to fairly allocate energy costs Commitment to consult on phasing out and a deadline date for the use of fossil fuel heating systems in off gas grid homes, public sector buildings and non-domestic commercial buildings Commitment to explore strengthening of ESOS Commitment to lay primary legislation to regulate buildings performance Commitment to consult on zoning for heat networks in 2021 with a view to introduce heat network zones by 2025 at the latestCrucially, the Energy White Paper sets out a clear and strategic role for decentralised energy. It sets out the importance of a smart, flexible system balanced through local solutions. It sets out the importance of heat networks and electrification of heat as crucial to decarbonising heat, especially at domestic levels. Finally, it sets out the importance of Government support to enable industry to decarbonise whilst remaining competitive. We, in industry, look forward to working together with Government to deliver.
