To provide heating, hot water and electricity to the Hospital the existing heating boilers have been replaced by a modern gas-fired 500kW combined heat and power unit to provide heat and generation of electricity, and four new gas fired boilers to provide hot water.
The Trust signed a 25 year contract to provide a modern combined heat and power (CHP) plant, replacement boilers, zonal heating controls and efficient lighting systems. The agreement also includes investment through the Private Finance Initiative and the subsequent operation and maintenance of the new plant, which will provide a better patient care environment. By using funding through the PFI scheme the Trust has been able to focus their capital budget on patient care and gain climate change levy exemption through the use of CHP.
The new energy centre was officially opened by Jane Hutt, AM, Minister for Health and Social Services in the Welsh Assembly Government, and has been recognised by the Welsh Environmental Awards initiative.
Under the agreement Dalkia is responsible for the following upgrades:
Heating and hot water plant design
Electrical distribution and lighting network refit
Installation of a 500kW gas fired CHP Engine
Installation of four new low temperature hot water (LTHW) boilers
Upgrading of the boilerhouse building
Upgrade of the site wide Building Management System (BMS)
Installation of zonal heating controls
Upgrading the existing electrical lighting with new low energy fittings and controllers
