Dr. Philip J. Nicholson joined the ADE team as Senior Researcher for ACE Research in April of 2023. His role focuses on delivering ADE's strategic evidence-based gaps (EBG) research programme, designed to meet the organisation's annual strategic priorities and the needs of its members.
Philip's meticulous approach to objective data analysis ensures robust and reliable research outcomes that support ADE’s commitment strategic priorities. Philip is adept at utilising advanced digital tools and methodologies, enhancing the precision and impact of our research. His expertise in data literacy and social science underpins his ability to conduct comprehensive and insightful analyses.
Before joining ADE, Philip spent ten years in academic research, specialising in GIS and sustainable development. During his Fellowship at UCL, he led projects on the integration of smart urban technologies and sustainable development, particularly within the context of India's Smart Cities initiative. His work offered a critical lens on how these initiatives align with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), evaluating their impact on urban sustainability and community well-being.
Philip's international experience includes leading fieldwork in Malawi and Myanmar, where he engaged with local communities and NGOs to develop sustainable urban planning solutions. His interdisciplinary approach combines creative methodologies, participatory GIS, and advanced social science research methods, critically examining the effectiveness of sustainable development practices in diverse contexts.
Philip holds a PhD in Human Geography from the University of Glasgow, an MA in Creative Practice for Narrative Environments from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, UAL, and a BA in Contemporary Fine Art from Sheffield Hallam University.
